This is me

Hello there,

My name is Tim, and I am 36 years old. I recently decided to return to college to finish my degree. I struggled many times throughout my college career, never quite finding a degree program that felt like it fit. Finally, after a couple of years of electives and general ed, I tried studying fine arts from a new media perspective. However, I learned that I didn't have the talent needed to succeed in that field. I was heartbroken and this led to me taking a break from college. After some self-pity followed by some health scares, I was ready to try again. Before jumping in, I thought back over the moments I had enjoyed most in my life. The moments that came to mind surprised me. They were when I was working with kids or listening to or advising my friends and colleagues. With that, my aim has now shifted from art to teaching. I hope I can help my future students find their futures a little quicker than I found my own, or at the very least be a sounding board for the cares and concerns while we are acquainted with one another.

As you may have seen a little bit earlier in my introduction, my relationship with art is a tad complex, but I still love it and its many forms. I grew up sketching or drawing to pass the time. This became one of the reasons I approached the new media design program. When I was younger, I was drawn more to paintings and murals. However, when I was 26, I was given a chance to visit the city of Fukuoka in Japan. While there, I explored many of the ancient shrines. There, I fell in love with how the many elements of art came together and formed beautiful works of art. The temple's design was enhanced by the sculptures of the deities and their messengers. Some sculptures were guardians for the temple, and others were to guide the parishioners through the temple. Finally, the walls of the rooms showed painted stories of the temple. Every piece was meticulously planned and cared for by its priests and priestesses. This experience was an inspiration for me.

Whenever you find yourself in Los Angeles, please check out LACMA and the surrounding museums.

  1. Beautiful introduction and picture of Japan! I love the details of Japan and it’s precious arts. Please share more! When you open yourself up and share you have a chance to grow as well as the others you share with. We can all benefit from your perspective of life and the world as you see it. Thank you. 😊🙏💕

  2. I love LACMA. Did you know that Steve Martin is a big patron of that museum? My mother taught 6th grade for most of her career and did a weekly art activity with her students. My brother and I were frequently her trial subjects for these project. In Fairbanks they have art teaching specialists that have developed kits for elementary teachers to use to do art lessons with kids. I hope you can find a great outlet for your art interests.

  3. Hi Tim, thank you for sharing your story on your education. I too went back and forth for a while trying to decide if business administration was where I wanted to go. After taking my GERs and with my extensive career in Human Resources I decided this is the direction I needed to continue down. In the fall of 2019 I suffered from a brain aneurism that left me in the hospital for a month, which was then followed by months of recovery I put my education on hold for longer than I had liked. I am now back part time and the closer I get to being done has me excited for what the future holds!
